Everything to know about the closing of the top in January

Modified the 04/12/23

As is the case each year, renovation and maintenance work is being done on the top floor of the Eiffel Tower, resulting in its temporary closure to the public from January 8th to February 9th, 2024. This is required in order to maintain this symbolic monument of Paris!

In January, the top floor of the Eiffel Tower gets a makeover. Necessary maintenance and renovation work is carried out every year at the top of the Eiffel Tower and on the elevators leading from the 2nd floor to the summit, resulting in the closing of this emblematic floor to the public. In 2024, this annual closing of the summit will take place from January 8 through February 9 included.

The top floor is very exposed!

Each year, repairs must be carried out on this level. It is very exposed to constant winds at this altitude (for example, when the wind on the ground reaches a speed of 31 mph (50 km/h) it hits more than 50 mph (80 km/h) at the top of the Tower), as well as bad weather of all types: freezing temperatures, rain, snow, hail, sun, etc. The summit is of course the most emblematic level and the dream destination of so many travelers! It is very busy and often saturated during the summer months. Half of the visitors to the Eiffel Tower go to it each year.

The maintenance work notably concerns the Duolift™ elevators leading to the top. These elevators (DUO 1 and DUO 2, composed of 2 cabs each) offer visitors an unforgettable experience as they ascend to the top of the Tower from the second floor. They are essential to the operation of the monument, and are undergoing comprehensive modernization work: enhanced performance and reliability, more energy-efficient, more pleasant for visitors and easier to operate for our elevator technicians.

Be sure to still visit the 1st and 2nd floors

In the meantime, our visitors that have planned a visit to the Tower during this period will have access up to the 2nd floor by stairs or elevator. This experience is both complete and impressive, with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the whole of Paris. The two levels of the 2nd floor offer the whole family a wide selection of shops, entertainment, snacks, and a macaroon bar Pierre Hermé Paris. In the evening, you'll be in the front row for the light show!

All 2nd-floor tickets grant access to the 1st floor of the Tower as well, where our winter terrace awaits you for a comforting sweet and/or savory break at the heart of the Tower's structure. On the menu: hot chocolate, mulled wine, pancakes, waffles, sweets, and much more besides!
